what is wrong with mel gibson?

As reported in The Raw Feed, Mel Gibson appears in the trailer (or in HD) for his upcoming film, Apocalypto. In a single frame at 1:46 (if you see the monkey scream, you've gone too far), Mel appears with a full beard and a cigarette, and is grinning like an idiot. One look at the photo below, and you have to ask yourself, has Mel lost it?
According to the movie's official site, Apocalypto is an "action-adventure set against the turbulent end times of the once great Mayan civilization. When his idyllic existence is brutally disrupted by a violent invading force, a man is taken on a perilous journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression where a harrowing end awaits him. Through a twist of fate spurred by the power of his love for his woman and his family he will make a desperate break to return home and to ultimately save his way of life." The movie, which will apparently be in the Mayan language with English subtitles, is due to hit theaters next year.
I'm hoping that synopsis is wrong, and it's actually about a bearded freak in flannel running around the jungle screaming gibberish. Then maybe I'd actually be interested in actually seeing it.
