'Changes Ahead for a Theater Near You'
Posted on Thursday, February 16, 2006
There's an interesting article on the NY Times' site today about how movie theaters are planning to price movies according to supply and demand.
"You will pay more for a ticket on the weekends and less on weekdays. You'll be able to buy a reserved seat in the center of the theater for a few extra dollars. One of these days, you may even have to pay more for a hit movie than for a bomb. The changes are under way, and they are long overdue." [source]
Economically, this seems like a good idea. But as a consumer that will be forced to pay the higher prices to see a hit movie on opening weekend, it doesn't seem fair. The article also mentions Coca Cola's plans in 1999 to install thermometers in their vending machines so they could charge more on hot days. Consumers revolted and Coca Cola claimed that they were never serious.
For the good of my wallet, I hope the same thing happens with movie theaters... although it doesn't seem likely.
