propaganda, murder & brangelina

I'm a few days late on this, but NewsDesigner.com's coverage of the Al-Zarqawi's murder in Iraq is inspiring. The site (which is normally concerned only with the trends and overall design and redesign of newspapers) posted the covers of major US newspapers that came out after everyone had already heard about the terror leader's slaying. It's definitely worth checking out...
Most disturbing and overtly racist is the New York Post's cover -- with the [disturbing] dead face of Al-Zarqawi and a voice bubble saying "Warm up the virgins." Page 2 and 3 was a spread with the head "Evil Zarqawi Blown To Hell." While I'm all for the uncensored freedom of press, that is going well beyond the realm of good taste. Shame on you, NY Post ... and shame on the people that consider what you print to be news.
I don't like where we are headed... Even a more respectable publication, Time magazine, is running a cover of Al-Zarqawi's face with a red X over it. While Al-Zarqawi was a bad guy, the press is seriously sensationalizing his murder. A few months ago, people actually died in riots stirred by an image of Muhammad with a turban bomb that was printed in a Denmark newspaper. I remember looking at my high school history book and being disturbed by the racist World War II propaganda. Looking at today's media, I get that same uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Or then again, maybe the spawn of Brangelina is all that we should concern ourselves with... thanks, Boston Herald, for showing us what is important.
