a historic trip upstairs
Posted on Thursday, September 07, 2006

Last night I had the rare opportunity to go upstairs inside the historic Union Hotel (built in 1812) in Flemington, NJ. The hotel's most famous guest was Charles Lindberg during the famous Lindberg kidnapping trail (1935) across the street at the old Flemington Court House. Thanks to a friend's father's connections and my work at the Hunterdon County Democrat newspaper, I was able to venture above the first floor restaurant and bar to the old hotel area. The second and third floor housed dozens of small rooms equipped with a sink, mirror and lighting. Each floor had a common bathroom and some storage space. The fourth floor is an enormous attic/loft area that has been inhabited by birds and bats for decades. Not many people are allowed to go upstairs, and almost no one gets to see the attic ... check out my flickr photo set ... cuz odds are that it will be your only look upstairs.
