coal fired plants
Posted on Sunday, October 22, 2006

So some guy on Flickr commented on one of my pics of the "nuclear reactors" from my road trip a few months back, saying that nuclear reactors don't have smoke stacks (like both the ones I passed) and that they are really Coal-Fired Power Plants. I researched his claim, and he's right ...there aren't even any nuclear reactors in West Virginia. I thought it was disturbing that people lived so closely to the second plant I passed in Haywood, WV. (What if there is a meltdown or something?!) But it's probably safer to live next to a nuclear plant than it is to live next to a coal-fired plant. Coal fired plants, like this one pump out massive amounts of toxic fumes every day, whereas Nuclear Reactors are virtually clean running ... unless of course they melt down -- then everybody just dies or has babies with 4 ears and 1 leg. (Don't worry ... that link doesn't have any pictures.)

I think it's still more fun to refer to them as nuclear reactors. Coal-Fired Power Plants just doesn't have the same ring to it.

I guess the Simpsons plant doesn't have smoke stacks either ... but in this picture, it does appear to have breasts.
