EW Popwatch reported today that USA Today has posted an exclusive first look at the new Get Smart movie. Starring Stephen Carell as Maxwell Smart, Anne Hathaway as Agent 99 and Alan Arkin as CONTROL's Chief, the movie is set to be released in June of 2008. I've been a huge fan of Get Smart since it aired on Nick-at-Night when I was a kid ... and I'm REALLY looking forward to this movie.
The USA Today article speaks of the need to update KAOS after the the end of the Cold War, "We try to show the disconnect between government agencies as we saw right after 9/11 when the CIA and FBI weren't really communicating," [Director Peter] Segal says. "We wanted to make sure we were politically satirical."
The article also talks about re-imagining the Agent 99 character by "telling an origin story of how Smart became an agent and met 99. In this version, she is the veteran spy who takes the newcomer under her wing." ... "99 is a little more kick-(butt) and tougher, more emancipated. She's more the female James Bond, teaching him the ropes."
These changes, along with the questionable casting of Miss Hathaway (she's rather young!) worry devoted fans, such as myself. But I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt. I'll keep my fingers crossed until June 2008! (Would you believe until June 2007? ... Would you believe for the next 5 minutes? ...)
