The Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance runs a small Farmer's Market at the old Dvoor Bros farm on the Route 12 Circle in Flemington. The market featured a variety of locally grown vegetables, cheeses, honey, soap, flowers, and meat. The market is open from 9-1pm, every Sunday between June and October. Check out Dvoor Farmer's Market and Hunterdon Land Trust Alliance sites for more information.
www.EatLocalChallenge.com outlines the reasons you should "eat local." Local foods boost the local economy, are fresher, and help to improve air quality and reduce polution. Also check out John Ikerd's essays entitled, "Eating Local: A Matter of Integrity" and "My Top Ten Reasons for Eating Local." Ikerd lists that eating local foods will help build a sustainable society, save farmland, and improves food quality, while reducing transportation costs (both monetarily and environmentally) and in effect, eliminates the middle man. The benefits of eating local foods is obvious.
Social and environmental reasons aside, my local fruits and veggies taste damn good! My tomatoes and blueberries are amazing! I'm already looking forward to next trip to my local farmer's market!
