New Jersey Death Penalty Repeal Advances to Corzine By Terrence Dopp
Dec. 13 (Bloomberg) -- New Jersey's Legislature became the first in the U.S. to repeal the death penalty, approving legislation that Governor Jon Corzine said he will sign.
A measure to replace the death penalty with a sentence of life in prison without parole passed the 80-member Assembly today in a 44-36 vote. Earlier this week, the legislation cleared the state's 40-member Senate by 21-16.
New Jersey's move may be a catalyst for other states to end capital punishment, opponents of executions said. Nationwide, executions have been virtually halted as the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether death by lethal injection violates constitutional prohibitions against cruel and unusual punishment.
