An Open Letter to the President
Posted on Tuesday, September 06, 2005
New Orleans Times-Picayune: "OUR OPINIONS: An open letter to the President"
Dear Mr. President:
We heard you loud and clear Friday when you visited our devastated city and the Gulf Coast and said, 'What is not working, we're going to make it right.'
Please forgive us if we wait to see proof of your promise before believing you. But we have good reason for our skepticism."

Internet is bulletin board for Katrina victims
Posted on Sunday, September 04, 2005
Wired News: "WASHINGTON (Reuters) - After 9/11, descriptions and photos of missing family, friends and co-workers were plastered on walls and bulletin boards in lower Manhattan, but with New Orleans a ghost town after Hurricane Katrina, the Internet is now the medium of choice for those seeking lost loved ones."

A Can't-Do Government
Posted on Sunday, September 04, 2005
A Can't-Do Government - New York Times:
"Before 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency listed the three most likely catastrophic disasters facing America: a terrorist attack on New York, a major earthquake in San Francisco and a hurricane strike on New Orleans. "The New Orleans hurricane scenario," The Houston Chronicle wrote in December 2001, "may be the deadliest of all." It described a potential catastrophe very much like the one now happening."
"Yesterday Mr. Bush made an utterly fantastic claim: that nobody expected the breach of the levees. In fact, there had been repeated warnings about exactly that risk. So America, once famous for its can-do attitude, now has a can't-do government that makes excuses instead of doing its job. And while it makes those excuses, Americans are dying."

U.S. Allies, and Others, Send Offers of Assistance
Posted on Saturday, September 03, 2005
U.S. Allies, and Others, Send Offers of Assistance - New York Times
The NY Times reports that "Earlier this week, Mr. Bush said on the ABC News program "Good Morning America" that the United States could fend for itself. "I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars," the president said of foreign governments. "But this country's going to rise up and take care of it."
Well it seems that our clueless leader was wrong. Over 59 countries and international organizations have offered aid to the US in the form of money, supplies, troops, medical supplies, temporary shelters, disaster specialists, fuel, etc. Countries such as Japan, France, Italy, Germany, China, Israel, Cuba, El Savador, Russia, and Saudi Arabia have offered assistance.
"The president of Venezuela, Hugo Cha¡vez - who often says the Bush administration wants to overthrow his government - offered soldiers, firefighters and other disaster specialists, fuel and $1 million in cash. But he also criticized President Bush's handling of the emergency."
"For four days there were warnings that the hurricane was going to make a direct hit, and the king of vacations at his ranch only said, 'You must flee,' " Mr. Cha¡vez said Wednesday. "He did not say how."
Way to go, GW.
