nerds in the hood
Posted on Thursday, December 29, 2005

The New York Times has published an article by Dave Itzkoff, about Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell's newfound internet fame because of their "Lazy Sunday" sketch. I've felt a little of the popularity as well -- most of my site hits since 12/19 have been thanks to the mention of them on my site.

Nerds in the Hood, Stars on the Web
"For most aspiring rappers, the fastest route to having material circulated around the World Wide Web is to produce a work that is radical, cutting-edge and, in a word, cool. But now a pair of "Saturday Night Live" performers turned unexpected hip-hop icons are discovering that Internet stardom may be more easily achieved by being as nerdy as possible. ..." (Read the rest of the article here)

As I mentioned in a comment to my previous post, you can see Samberg and Will Forte's "Lettuce" sketch on DevilDucky.com. You can also check out more stuff from the guys behind "Lazy Sunday" on TheLonelyIsland.com.

what is wrong with mel gibson?
Posted on Monday, December 26, 2005

As reported in The Raw Feed, Mel Gibson appears in the trailer (or in HD) for his upcoming film, Apocalypto. In a single frame at 1:46 (if you see the monkey scream, you've gone too far), Mel appears with a full beard and a cigarette, and is grinning like an idiot. One look at the photo below, and you have to ask yourself, has Mel lost it?

According to the movie's official site, Apocalypto is an "action-adventure set against the turbulent end times of the once great Mayan civilization. When his idyllic existence is brutally disrupted by a violent invading force, a man is taken on a perilous journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression where a harrowing end awaits him. Through a twist of fate spurred by the power of his love for his woman and his family he will make a desperate break to return home and to ultimately save his way of life." The movie, which will apparently be in the Mayan language with English subtitles, is due to hit theaters next year.

I'm hoping that synopsis is wrong, and it's actually about a bearded freak in flannel running around the jungle screaming gibberish. Then maybe I'd actually be interested in actually seeing it.

Sweet! (potato pie)
Posted on Saturday, December 24, 2005

Today I made a sweet potato pie (yup, from scratch) for Christmas dinner tomorrow! I've been a baking fool this holiday ... so far I've made the pie, sugar cookies ( with homemade frosting), oatmeal-banana cookies with M&M's, white trash, and gingerbread cookies. But hey, it's Christmas! Woohoo!

a white trash christmas
Posted on Wednesday, December 21, 2005

As Christmas (Happy Holidays!) gets closer and closer, I'm figuring that it's probably time to start making Christmas cookies. Today I made white trash, which is an idea that I stole from Jen, who made some similar trash last year. I made my trash out if a combination of melted white chocolate, mini pretzels, M&Ms, Multigrain Chex, chopped walnuts, almond slivers, cheerios, smashed candy canes, and some sprinkles. After some research on the net, I decided it was too dangerous to try to the melt the white chocolate in the microwave (in fear of scorching it), so I fashioned a double boiler out of my spaghetti pot, a plastic microwave-safe bowl, and a bent wire coat hanger.

What resulted looked more like a blob of Santa's vomit after a junk food binge, but I'm betting that it tastes pretty good!

breathtaking inanity
Posted on Tuesday, December 20, 2005

I'm loving all the news about US District Judge John Jones III and his ruling against the Dover, PA school board's insistence that "Intelligent Design" (a.k.a. Creationism with a different name) should be taught in biology classes. Previously, the school board had forced science teachers to read a statement "telling students that evolution was 'Just a theory' and inviting them to consider alternatives. The only alternative specifically mentioned was "intelligent design," the notion that life is so complex that it could not possibly have been the work of natural selection alone and must have been the work of an unspecified creative intelligence. [source]" Jones went so far to say that Dover's policy represented "Breathtaking inanity."

Equally offended by this ruling (I'm assuming) are the idiots who are freaking out about store clerks and advertisementsts that say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas." As a former store clerk, I was never told what holiday greeting I should use...but out of respect for all religions and beliefs, I would say "Happy Holidays." I just don't understand why anyone would want to alienate someone who celebrates Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc. by saying "Merry Christmas." Reuters UK reports that "Religious conservatives are threatening lawsuits and boycotts to insist that store clerks and advertisements say 'Merry Christmas.'"

Is there really nothing better to worry about?! I mean, we are at war! People are starving around the world! Kids are dying! Katrina is still a problem, so is that tsunami that people seem to have forgotten about... But no, we need to now boycott chain department stores because the zit-faced, minimum wage earning teenager behind the counter said "Happy Holidays" to you. Now that's a battle worth fighting.

But wait! Before you take a side, heed this warning: "Every time you say 'Happy Holidays,' an angel gets AIDS." Thanks, Jon Stewart.

The Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia
Posted on Monday, December 19, 2005

I actually laughed at SNL over the weekend! A ludicrous thought, I thought, I know -- but I actually see Fallon-like potential in newcomer, Andy Samberg. Not to say that Fallon was great (actually I caught him singing on Dr. Phil the other day ... have things gotten that bad Jimmy?), but at least you could laugh at SNL occasionally when he was around. Check out Samberg and Chris Parnell's "Lazy Sunday" rap on YouTube.com (loads faster) or the official SNL site (takes forever to load...I gave up). Also check out the blog post on BoingBoing.net.

I was feeling quite censored today when I found out that my story for our annual spoof newspaper at work would probably be edited down to inoffensive dribble. Since when is a story about public urination and widespread drunkenness offensive? I'm not sure why on earth a spoof newspaper has to be held in such high regard, but I guess it's the nature of the business...

I've also added a few new blog links -- check 'em out. BoingBoing.net, PrefixBlog.com, & NewsDesigner.com.

NJ Senate passes bill to suspend executions
Posted on Thursday, December 15, 2005

Good news! Today the NJ Senate passed the death penalty moratorium bill by a 30-6 strong bipartisan vote. I've attached part of the press release below...

Trenton -- The New Jersey State Senate today approved S-709, legislation calling for an immediate moratorium on all executions in New Jersey and creating a new study commission which will examine the flaws in the State's current death penalty system. Should S-709 become law, New Jersey would become the first State to legislatively impose a moratorium on the death penalty.

"By its action today, the Senate has signaled its deep concern with the State's current death penalty system and sent a clear message that the death penalty just does not work," said Celeste Fitzgerald, Director of New Jerseyans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, a statewide organization that advocates replacing the death penalty with life without parole.

dance dance revolution?
Posted on Saturday, December 10, 2005

Has the hype surrounding Memoirs of a Geisha made you feel that it is your civic responsibility to see the film? But are you conflicted with feelings of utter apathy for the movie? I offer you these two Geisha themed alternatives to sitting for two hours and fifteen minutes in a crowded theater this holiday season.

#1 - Beck's 'Hell Yes' Video
Beck has drafted 4 dancing robot geishas to perform in his video for the song 'Hell Yes.' Sure his lyrics don't always make very much sense, "Looking for my place on assembly lines \ Fake prizes rising out of the bomb holes \ Skeleton boys hyped up in purple \ Smoke rings blow from across the disc" but it is a catchy tune none the less. To watch, go to Beck's site, click "Video" and click "Hell Yes" on the menu that appears. As Christina Ricci says in the song, "Please enjoy."

#2 - Team America: World Police
In one of the final scenes of Team America: World Police, there are six geisha dancers that entertain the group of world leaders at Kim Jong Il's International World Peace Ceremony. Although they are out of time, and sing things like "Cry Yum Bong, Bong," ... give them a break! They are puppets! Pick up the unrated version and laugh your ass off while filling your Geisha quota this holiday season!

World AIDS Day
Posted on Thursday, December 01, 2005

December 1st marks the 18th annual World AIDS Day. AIDS affects every continent, every country. More than 40 million people live with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, or with AIDS itself. There were five million new cases this year - more than half were in sub-Saharan Africa and more than half were among young people.

Eighteen years ago, world health ministers decided a global effort would be needed to stop the spread of AIDS. AIDS has claimed the lives of at least 25 million people. And it has touched the lives of many, many more. [continue...]
