light up your pipes...
Posted on Tuesday, April 25, 2006

Monday's fire in Raritan Township was not because of exploding gas pipes as I previously reported, but rather some industrial-sized drainage pipes which seem to have mysteriously caught fire. About $200,000 worth of plastic pipes went up in smoke, as reported by the Express-Times. The Star-Ledger also has a story here. What they have not reported is how the fire started, especially since they seem to have ruled out gas and electricity. In the Ledger, Flemington's Fire Chief say that the matter is "Obviously ... under investigation."

clouds of smoke over flemington

There's no news available yet on this evening's fire at the construction lot behind McDonald's off of Reaville Ave. in Raritan Township, NJ. From what I've heard, fire erupted from gas lines that were laid through the site, sometime around 5pm this evening. I've posted the three photos below on my flickr page, each is taken by a camera phone ... so the quality isn't great. The first I took from the roof of the Hunterdon County Democrat building (don't tell anybody I was up there) which is about 2 miles away (as the bird flies). The second was taken by my friend Heather, very close to the scene. The third was taken by my friend Matt, also very close to the scene.

Unrelated is the fire at TGI Fridays last Wednesday (about 200 feet from today's fire) that is believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette. News on that can be found here and here. Friday also burned in 2001, when a kitchen fire left a portion of the building gutted. The Fridays site was previously home to the Flemington Circle Diner, which burned to the ground in 1994 by arsonists.

it's time to pay the price

If we're not going to indict or impeach George W. Bush for lying, unjustly declaring war, murder, illegal wire tapping, being dumb, etc.... then maybe we can at least charge him for having illegal music on his ipod. [read Boing Boing's post here] In this BBC news interview, W. is asked what songs are on his ipod. "President Bush's iPod contains songs by the Beatles; since no Beatles songs have been licensed for the iTunes Music Store yet [or at any other music site], these must have come from ripped CDs." The RIAA [ocasionally] claims that ripping music from CDs is illegal.

Posted on Monday, April 17, 2006

Yet another Clerks II preview has been posted here. Am I just in a good mood today, or does this look a little better than the first two? Oh, and happy day-after Bunny & Egg day... a rather strange combination if you ask me.

what's in a name?
Posted on Saturday, April 08, 2006

Nasa is giving you the opportunity to Send your name to the asteroid belt aboard the Dawn spacecraft. Your name will be recorded onto a microchip that will be placed aboard the spacecraft accompanying it on its mission to the asteroid belt. Dawn plans to visit the two largest asteroids in our solar system's asteroid belt, Ceres and Vesta. I'm not sure exactly what it means to have your name shot into space, but I submitted mine. The nerd side of me is imagining some sort of Star Trek: The Motion Picture incident, hundreds of years from now when 'dam S'ens (instead of V'ger) torments the galaxy and needs an overacting man in a girdle to save the day. Bah, who am I kidding? William Shatner is my hero.

It was a beautiful day in Ringoes today ... and somebody thought it was a nice day to paraglide. I snapped some pics from the parking lot behind my apartment, and managed to animate them into a crappy-quality .gif file. There's another picture on my flickr site.
