lost in lostpedia
Posted on Thursday, October 26, 2006

Wikipedia. It defines itself as "a multilingual, web-based free content on going encyclopedia project. ... Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers, allowing must articles to be changed by almost anyone with access to the website."

Lost. Lost is "an American serial drama television series that follows the present and past lives of a group of plane crash survivors on a mysterious tropical island, somewhere in the South Pacific." Yeah that's from Wikipedia too.

Lostpedia. Launched Sept. 22, 2005, Lostpedia "was created in order to allow fans of the show to organize the massive amount of theories, plotlines and cast information that was generated by the shows premise."

Lostpedia has consumed a lot of my internet surfing time in the last few days since I discovered it. If you're a fan of Lost, [how could you not be???] check it out. It's breathtakingly awesome. Suggested starting points: The Valenzetti Equation, The Statue, Literary Works, The Monster.

the killers invade atlantic city
Posted on Sunday, October 22, 2006

Yes, my friends, that's The Killers lead singer, Brandon Flowers. You'll just have to take my word for it... I took the photo with my phone, and the quality is awful. I took this and other photos at The Killers' concert, Saturday night, at the Borgata hotel & casino in Atlantic City, NJ. The show was fantastic, the music sounded great, and I had an awesome time. If you get a chance, definitely catch their show!

I also had a chance to check out the AC beach on Saturday before the show, and snapped some pretty cool shots. Check them out on my Flickr site.

coal fired plants
Posted on Sunday, October 22, 2006

So some guy on Flickr commented on one of my pics of the "nuclear reactors" from my road trip a few months back, saying that nuclear reactors don't have smoke stacks (like both the ones I passed) and that they are really Coal-Fired Power Plants. I researched his claim, and he's right ...there aren't even any nuclear reactors in West Virginia. I thought it was disturbing that people lived so closely to the second plant I passed in Haywood, WV. (What if there is a meltdown or something?!) But it's probably safer to live next to a nuclear plant than it is to live next to a coal-fired plant. Coal fired plants, like this one pump out massive amounts of toxic fumes every day, whereas Nuclear Reactors are virtually clean running ... unless of course they melt down -- then everybody just dies or has babies with 4 ears and 1 leg. (Don't worry ... that link doesn't have any pictures.)

I think it's still more fun to refer to them as nuclear reactors. Coal-Fired Power Plants just doesn't have the same ring to it.

I guess the Simpsons plant doesn't have smoke stacks either ... but in this picture, it does appear to have breasts.

dinner time!
Posted on Sunday, October 15, 2006

I had the strange urge to photograph my dinner this evening. On the menu was Amy's Soy Cheese Frozen Pizza, topped with sauteed organic eggplant and sliced roma tomatoes. It turned out even better than the tomatoes and broccoli that usually top my frozen pizza! I realize it's weird to be excited about vegetables and soy cheese pizzas. But I'm a vegetarian -- so it's okay. Isn't it?

exploring history
Posted on Wednesday, October 11, 2006

I went for a drive today, and checked out the recently remodeled Hunterdon County Library, where I worked from 1995 until 1997. It was nice to catch up with some old friends. From there I went in search of the Charles A. Lindbergh Estate, "Highfields" ... found it here. After snapping a picture of the Historical Site sign, I drove down the 1/2 mile driveway ... but I came across a white van that chased followed me back down the driveway before I had a chance to snap a photo of the infamous kidnapping site. After my escape, I stumbled across the Stoutsburg Cemetery ... and my strange fascination with old cemeteries led me over a giant pothole and down a gravel path to snap a pic.

I always get a kick outa thinking of the historic/famous people that were in a place before me. From what I've read, Calvin Coolidge and Amelia Earhart visited "Highfields" -- I traveled down the same driveway and looked at the same trees as Lindbergh, Coolidge, and Earhart. I wonder if my heart was pounding anywhere near as fast as Bruno Hauptmann's as I drove away. Cemeteries always make me wonder about their residents. They're lonely, quiet places and yet the familes are all together. Today was an odd day of remembering, thinking and searching ... sometimes an overcast sky and rain showers puts me in a strange mood.

my ghostly reservation
Posted on Thursday, October 05, 2006

Five of my photos were published this week in the October issue of Hunterdon Life magazine. You can't see my photos (and photo credit) too well online, but pick up this week's issue of the Hunterdon County Democrat and find Hunterdon Life folded inside.

The photos and story relate to my evening upstairs in the Union Hotel, on Main Street of Flemington, NJ. Read more about it in my previous post, and check out the original photos in my Flickr photo set.

i'm lost again
Posted on Thursday, October 05, 2006

Last night was the season 3 premiere of LOST, which is by far the greatest show on TV. I'm 1/2 way through my second viewing (yes I have a problem) which is taking longer than an hour (the standard run-time) because my finger is poised over the pause button. Again (like during the previous 2 seasons) I am obsessed with the most minute and insignificant details... The book club was reading Stephen King's Carrie (is that a shout out to uber-fan Stephen King or some sort of sign of what is to come?), Juliet plays Petula Clark's Downtown on her CD player (quick! Google the lyrics and see if there could be any underlying significance!). And just when I pat myself on the back for being such a great Lost detective, I stumble across EW Popwatch's Lost entry that points out that Downtown was actually inside the case for Talking Heads' Speaking In Tongues! Now does that add another level to the mystery, or did ABC have trouble getting the rights to a Talking Heads song?! Hurry! Get me a paper bag to breathe into! I'm so obsessed that I think I might hyperventilate!

bring on bk ... just not the food
Posted on Wednesday, October 04, 2006

Burger King is disgusting. Sure ... I'm a vegetarian and all ... but ... Burger King is disgusting. I was just looking at the Nutritional Information .pdf and found that if you order a Triple Whopper Sandwich with cheese, a King Size Fries, and King Sized Chocolate Shake you can eat 2900 calories in one sitting. Seriously guys, watch Super Size Me.

Anyway, now that I prefaced that with a "this place is gross warning" ... how awesome are their commercials?! I mean, they have the ridiculously creepy The King, Hootie, Subservient Chicken, the Whopperettes, the Big Buckin' Chicken (that old cowboy freaks me out), and others. Love or hate their ads, they are definitely original. During tonight's season premiere of South Park, I caught their latest entry -- "Eat like snake" [I couldn't find it on YouTube or Google Videos, so I'm guessing it's very new] which had a guy dislocating and stretching his jaw to consume a triple burger like a snake. It was gross ... but in an age when people are fast forwarding or avoiding commercials altogether with TiVo, Burger King is doing the right thing. Sure, I look forward to a day when a commercial break doesn't feature people eating dead animals... but until that day, bring on the BK commercials. They entertain me. Just don't eat there, cuz Burger King is disgusting.

controversial? unpatriotic? i'm intrigued.
Posted on Monday, October 02, 2006

Sure, I'd love to see him stripped of power, publicly humiliated, tarred and feathered, and reduced to the hilarious joke that I know he is ... but assassinated? Well ... maybe that's a little harsh. Our commander in chief, George W. Bush, meets his fate in this month's Death of a President. The whodunit documentary-styled film takes place years after assassination and employs real news footage, actors and CGI to "recreate" the fictional events. While most the reviews I've read revel in the unpatriotism, they tend to say it flatlines after the controversy wears off. On the other hand, it recently grabbed the international critic's prize at the Toronto Film Festival. Personally, I'm a little curious ... especially after the eerily realistic trailer.

Do you want to see it?
