nj takes another step towards morality
Posted on Wednesday, January 03, 2007

"The Commission recommends that the death penalty in New Jersey be abolished and replaced with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served in a maximum security facility. The Commission also recommends that any cost savings resulting from the abolition of the death penalty be used for benefits and services for survivors of victims of homicide." (From the Commission Report)

After months of work, the New Jersey Death Penalty Study Commission has handed down their report to the NJ Legislature and Governor Corzine. We are five steps away from the abolition bill being signed -- The Assembly and Senate committees, The Assembly and Senate floor votes, and the Governor's signature.

Celeste Fitzgerald, the Director of NJADP urges you to contact your state legislators as soon as possible about the report. Find out who your state legislator is, and tell them: "I oppose the death penalty. Now that the New Jeresy Death Penalty Study Commission, which was created by the State Legislature, has recommended replacing the death penalty with life without parole, i strongly urge you to sponsor and actively support S-171 (A-795), bills that would accomplish that worthy and just goal."
