kfc is giving me a headache
Posted on Friday, April 27, 2007
As a vegetarian, I could really do without the constant barrage of carnivorous advertisements on television. Beef? It's not what's for dinner at my house. And I have a feeling that even if I did partake in the consumption of dead animals, I'd still find Kentucky Fried Chicken to be disgusting. Take their Famous Bowls -- what could be better than a bowl of mashed potatoes, fried chicken, corn, gravy and cheese all mixed together. It sounds like something that's supposed to come out of you, not something that's supposed to go into you. And 720 calories ... that's what? Half of what you should eat in a day?
But anyway... back to commercials. It seems that KFC's latest commercial offering (below) has been secretly implanted with something called MosquitoTone. From WebWire.com: "The MosquitoTone, a high frequency tone allegedly heard by only segments of the population, is embedded in a new KFC television advertisement to introduce the Boneless Variety Bucket. Hungry KFC fans who can guess where the sound is placed in the ad will have an opportunity to be among the first to try the Boneless Variety Bucket."
It might sound like a wacky marketing idea that embraces this cool new concept, but in actuality, it's a load of crap. Every time the commercial comes on, I cringe when the ear-piercing noise attempts to shatter my eardrums. I would be genuinely surprised if there's anyone out there that CAN'T hear that annoying noise. Forget their ridiculous fights to stop profanity and nipples from slipping out on television -- the FCC should fine KFC for giving me a headache.
While I never used to be an Alec Baldwin fan, his recent characters in Will & Grace, The Departed, Running With Scissors and 30 Rock have completely turned me around. In recent years, Baldwin has embraced a dry, self-deprecating, absurd humor that is quite simply hilarious. Baldwin is the best character on 30 Rock and I would really hate to see him leave the show. link |

perry bible fellowship

As suggested by seals, check out Nicholas Gurewitch's very funny comics at The Perry Bible Fellowship. From Wikipedia: "The Perry Bible Fellowship (or PBF) is a newspaper comic strip and webcomic by Nicholas Gurewitch. It originated in the Syracuse University newspaper The Daily Orange. The comics are usually three or four panels long, and are generally characterized by the juxtaposition of whimsical childlike imagery or fantasy with extremely morbid, absurdist humor. Common themes include religion, sexuality, war, science fiction, suicide, irony, violence, and death." link |

meet robert sergel...
Posted on Sunday, April 22, 2007
Meet Robert Sergel. He's a 24 year old guy from Cambridge, Massachusetts, that may be 17 feet tall (or at least, it says that on his MySpace comments and if it proves to be true, he's at least 8 feet taller than the world's tallest man ... which is pretty freak'n cool.) He draws Idiot Comics (see the one above this post that I've so kindly stolen without permission). Sometimes he kicks his camera down the stairs. He's in a cool band called The Channels. I suggest listening to the song, 'Trevor' -- it made me laugh. Robert also preserves textbook doodles and posts photo s of his purchases from the Chelsea Flea Market on the Koenig And Cunningham Archaeological Society website ... which I think is a joke, but on another level I fear that I may have insulted him by thinking that. I've never met Robert, but he seems like a pretty cool guy. He's got the whole quadruple threat thing going for him -- he's an artist, humorist, musician and photographer -- four qualities that I often aspire to, but rarely, if ever, attain. [Much thanks to my fellow blogger & online friend, The Prodigal Daughter for the link.] link |

only 69%?

You Are 69% New Jersey!
You are definitely Jersey. Well done, my friend. You are most likely from this great state, and you fit right in. Odds are, you love being Jersey!
The USA Today article speaks of the need to update KAOS after the the end of the Cold War, "We try to show the disconnect between government agencies as we saw right after 9/11 when the CIA and FBI weren't really communicating," [Director Peter] Segal says. "We wanted to make sure we were politically satirical."
The article also talks about re-imagining the Agent 99 character by "telling an origin story of how Smart became an agent and met 99. In this version, she is the veteran spy who takes the newcomer under her wing." ... "99 is a little more kick-(butt) and tougher, more emancipated. She's more the female James Bond, teaching him the ropes."
These changes, along with the questionable casting of Miss Hathaway (she's rather young!) worry devoted fans, such as myself. But I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt. I'll keep my fingers crossed until June 2008! (Would you believe until June 2007? ... Would you believe for the next 5 minutes? ...) link |

the sopranos in seven
Posted on Sunday, April 01, 2007
A fantastic refresher of the first six seasons of The Sopranos in 7 minutes and 36 seconds. Don't forget that the new season starts a week from today, on Sunday, April 8th. I was going to thank writer Paul Gulyas and editor/producer Joe Sabia for being uber fans of the series, but it seems they work for the HBO Online Division. So, I guess, thanks for doing your jobs well.
