waterboarding?
Posted on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 What is waterboarding? This is a question that I've been asking myself for a while now, but I kept forgetting to look it up. It was a major issue that recently held up the nomination of Michael Mukasey as US Attorney General, and it came up again today during the CNN YouTube Republican Debate. From Wikipedia, here's the definition:
Waterboarding is a torture technique that simulates drowning in a controlled environment. It consists of immobilizing an individual on his or her back, with the head inclined downward, and pouring water over the face to force the inhalation of water into the lungs. Waterboarding has been used to obtain information, coerce confessions, punish, and intimidate. In contrast to merely submerging the head, waterboarding elicits the gag reflex, and can make the subject believe death is imminent. Waterboarding's use as a method of torture or means to support interrogation is based on its ability to cause extreme mental distress while possibly creating no lasting physical damage to the subject. The psychological effects on victims of waterboarding can last long after the procedure. Although waterboarding in cases can leave no lasting physical damage, it carries the real risks of extreme pain, damage to the lungs, brain damage caused by oxygen deprivation, injuries as a result of struggling against restraints (including broken bones), and even death.

Posted on Monday, November 19, 2007 What movie has been the subject of a crazy marketing campaign since its untitled trailer first debuted before July's Transformer release. What movie has lopped the head off of the Statue of Liberty and blown up a bunch of NYC buildings, all while throwing a few unsuspecting 20-somethings into absolute peril?
What I'm not really sure about is whether this movie really looks as awesome as I think it does, or if I'm just SO starved for Lost that anything with the J.J. Abram moniker on it looks amazing.
this. is. awesome.

Granted, the music is sloppy and the Pokemon stuff is dumb ... but seriously, why couldn't we have this much fun when I was in MRD? link |

strike! ... now what?
Posted on Wednesday, November 07, 2007 With TV and film writers declaring a strike with no end in sight ... one question comes to mind. How does this effect me? The Los Angeles Times has compiled a grid of how long your favorite television shows will last before spiraling into rerun oblivion. Check it out!
one of these things is just like the other

I was paging through a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine, and noticed something familiar in an ad for the upcoming Country Music Awards. There's a Star Trek logo in the background of their ad. A little research turned up the fact that it's also their logo. Seriously ... that's weird, right? Some others have noticed this as well.
This reminds me of something that's been bugging me about HP's ad campaign that features silhouettes of hands with writing on them. They remind me an awful lot of the cover of Jonathan Safran Foer's novel, 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.' A little research has turned up that the cover of JSF's novel was designed by Gray318 (a.k.a. Jonathan Gray), a Londoner who designs book covers for US and UK publishers. The only commonality that I can find between Gray and HP is that Gray may be "developing a full digital typeface based on these letters, which is to be licensed exclusively by Hewlett Packard." (mentioned here, which references mad.co.uk -- but you can't read the article without a subscription ... which I don't have.)
This reminds me of Quark's logo controversy from about a year ago. Quark commissioned Siclamartin to create a new logo and brand identity. What resulted was a 'major public relations challenge...' (read about it here.)
So what does this say about creativity? Has everything already been done? Or do we just need to work a little harder?
at long last, the truth is out there ... again

Next X-Files movie has a premiere date by Anna Johns
Mark your calendars, schedule a sitter: the next X-Files movie will hit the theaters on July 25, 2008.
The July release date puts the unnamed movie smack dab in the middle of the summer blockbuster season, so Fox is evidently counting on this movie to be pretty big. The first X-Files film, Fight the Future, made $30 million during opening weekend and went on to make $189 million worldwide.
veronica mars, back from the dead

Truth be told, I was a big fan of Veronica Mars. And although it ultimately was not picked up for a forth season, a pilot for Veronica Mars 'in the FBI' was filmed. If CW allowed, the VM universe was set to jump forward a few years in time (season 3 was freshman year of college), in attempt to re-imagine [save] the series. The 12-minute pilot, which has found its way to YouTube, is bittersweet. On the one hand, it's great to see Veronica Mars back in action -- but knowing that this is presumably the last we'll ever see of our favorite pint-sized, spunky, blonde sleuth is heartbreaking. On that note, enjoy!
