Medical Marijuana Vending Machines Take Root in LA: Turn On, Tune In, Enter Your Pin Number

Wednesday, January 30, 2008

LOS ANGELES - The city that popularized the fast food drive-thru has a new innovation: 24-hour medical marijuana vending machines.

Patients suffering from chronic pain, loss of appetite and other ailments that marijuana is said to alleviate can get their pot with a dose of convenience at the Herbal Nutrition Center, where a large machine will dole out the drug around the clock.

"Convenient access, lower prices, safety, anonymity," inventor and owner Vincent Mehdizadeh said, extolling the benefits of the machine.

But federal drug agents say the invention may need unplugging.

"Somebody owns (it), it's on a property and somebody fills it," said DEA Special Agent Jose Martinez. "Once we find out where it's at, we'll look into it and see if they're violating laws."

At least three dispensaries in the city, including two belonging to Mehdizadeh, have installed vending machines to distribute the drug to people who carry cards authorizing marijuana use.

Mehdizadeh said he spent seven months to develop and patent the black, armored box, which he calls the "PVM," or prescription vending machine.

A sliding fence protects the tinted windows of his dispensary, barely distinguishing it from a busy thoroughfare of strip malls, automobile dealers and furniture shops. A box resembling a large refrigerator stands inside the nearly empty shop, near a few shelves stocked with vitamins and herbs.

A guard in a black T-shirt emblazoned with the word "Security" on the front stands at the door. A poster of Bob Marley decorates a back room.

The computerized machine requires fingerprint identification and a prepaid card with a magnetic stripe. Once the card and fingerprint are verified, a bright green envelope with the pot drops down a slot.

Mehdizadeh says any user approved for medical marijuana and registered in a computer database at his dispensaries can pre-purchase the drug and then use the machine to pick up.

The process provides convenience and privacy for users who may otherwise feel uncomfortable about buying marijuana, Mehdizadeh said.

At the Timothy Leary Medical Dispensary in the San Fernando Valley, the vending machine is accessible only during business hours. An employee there said the machine was introduced about five months ago, and provides speedy service.

"It helps a lot of patients who are in a lot of pain and don't want to wait around to get help," Robert Schwartz said. "It's been working out great."

Mehdizadeh said he sought the advice of doctors, and decided to limit the amount of marijuana per user to an ounce per week. Each purchase from the machine yields 1/8th or 2/8th of an ounce. By eliminating a vendor behind the counter, he said, the machine offers users lower drug prices. The 1/8th ounce packet would cost about $40 -- $20 lower than the average price at other dispensaries.

retail hell
Posted on Monday, January 28, 2008

Yet another strip mall is being built in the Flemington area, bringing the area of undeveloped space down to about 1 square inch. The Shoppes At Flemington is set to feature Talbots, Victoria's Secret, Payless Shoes, Coldwater Creek, Ann Taylor, Lane Bryant, Bath & Body Works, New York & Company, Jos. A. Bank, Bensi, and others. My question is: with most of these stores already only 30 minutes or less from Flemington, do we really need this? We already have a Dunkin' Donuts about 2 miles from a Dunkin' Donuts (with at least 2 more about 10 minutes away), A pizza place, Chinese food joint, and a cleaners every few feet or so, and a Walgreens across an intersection from a Rite Aid, across an intersection from a WaWa, across an intersection from a lot that will become ... wait for it ... ANOTHER WAWA...

When is enough, enough??

I brought Spring home from Tabby's Place today, and it couldn't have gone better! It was a day of playing, happiness, exploration, sniffing, eating, pooping, and peeing (both in the litter box!). Spring seems very happy to be here, and I'm happy to have her! Count on many updates to follow ... as soon as I've recovered from my move!

The promotional poster for Season 4 of Lost has been released, via Docartz.com. Notice the reflection of a skyline in the water? How about the big number '6' ... or is it a mirror of the number '9'? Very interesting! 9pm on the 31st seems so far away!

While the commercial is definitely funny and original -- that stream of liquid at the end creeps me out a bit. I wonder if it's the first stream of pee that's ever aired on broadcast television?

From CNN.com...

Unknowing Twins Marry Each Other

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British twins who had been separated at birth learned they were related only after they had become husband and wife, a senior British lawmaker said. The marriage has been annulled.

The couple's identities have been protected for legal reasons.

Their case was first highlighted by Lord Alton of Liverpool during a discussion on donor conception in the House of Lords in December, but only came to light Friday.

The peer told the House of Lords that a court annulled the union as soon as the twins' true relationship became known.

"They were never told that they were twins," he said during the Dec. 10 debate on a law covering human fertility and embryology. They had been adopted by separate families and "met later in life and felt an inevitable attraction, and the judge had to deal with the consequences of the marriage that they entered into and all the issues of their separation."

No further details about the couple have emerged, and it is not known when the marriage took place or how long they were together before they discovered the truth.

a shout out from rome
Posted on Friday, January 11, 2008

I first saw this story today (it's from December 19th) and felt truly proud to be a New Jerseyan. Check it out:

ROME -- The city of Rome lit up the Colosseum today to celebrate New Jersey's decision to abolish the death penalty, as well as a United Nations vote calling for a moratorium on capital punishment.

The ancient arena was bathed in white light from a special run of electricity through the world's most famous arena out of an agreement with an international lay Catholic group, The Community of Sant'Egidio, which advocates ending the death penalty worldwide.

The Colosseum, a site of executions and gladiator contests during the Roman Empire, has emerged as a symbol in organized campaigns against capital punishment. It has received the golden treatment -- its regular lighting is white -- about 20 times since 1999, most recently last month after a committee of the United Nations General Assembly approved a non-binding resolution calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions, said Mario Marazziti, a spokesman for Sant'Egidio.

save the cheerleader... kill mohinder
Posted on Wednesday, January 09, 2008

I laughed at loud at the Mohinder dig in this post by EW.com's Gary Susman about the new Heroes action figures. He wrote:

"Hey, strike-afflicted Heroes fans! Can't wait until the next episode of your show airs, whenever that may be? Now you can create your own adventures with Mezco's Heroes dolls! There's Claire, Sylar, Hiro, Mohinder, and two Peters (one flying, one earthbound)! And just like on the show, the Mohinder doll is totally useless and doesn't do anything! Sadly, there's no Molly doll to help you find the others if you lose them."

The Dolls Action Figures are by Mezco and should be in stores as of today!

man calls 911, canabalizing girlfriend
Posted on Monday, January 07, 2008

From USA Today...

Cops: Texas man calls 911, says he's eating girlfriend

Christopher McCuin called 911 early Saturday morning to report a particularly grisly crime. The Dallas Morning News says he "calmly described murdering his girlfriend and cooking her ear."

When police arrived at his house in Tyler, Texas, the paper says the 24-year-old tried to hold them off with a kitchen knife but eventually surrendered after a short standoff. When cops entered the residence, the paper says they "found a human ear boiling in a stovetop pan and raw flesh on a nearby plate, with a fork stuck in it."

"Either he was going to eat it, had been eating it, or that's what he wanted it to look like," Sheriff J.B. Smith says. "I'm not shocked anymore -- surprised that people can do such horrible things to each other -- but not shocked. I've seen it all."

The Morning News says Jana Shearer, the 21-year-old victim, was a mail clerk.

conan is better than ever without writers...
Posted on Sunday, January 06, 2008

Wednesday saw the return of my favorite Late Night personality, Conan O'Brien. O'Brien is going writer-less until the WGA strike ends, and in my humble opinion, he's never been funnier. Whether he's dancing or attempting to break his wedding ring spinning record...

Or showing us around his office and playing Rock Star..

Or just learning how to get rich from psychopath Jim Cramer...

..Conan has been fantastic despite the lack of writers. Tune in weekdays at 12:35am on NBC.

a fungus amongus
Posted on Sunday, January 06, 2008

An article posted on Boing Boing, (which references an article posted on BldgBlog) tells the story of a South Carolina Family that recently found a 'hidden room' in their newly purchased home. The room was hidden behind a bookcase, and contained a hand-written note that said "You Found It!" What they found was that the house was infected with various forms of toxic mold, including "Stachybotrys, the so-called Toxic Black Mold, which can cause 'respiratory bleeding' in infants."

Attached to the story is a photo of toxic black mold (pictured above). What freaks me out a little ... is that it looks frighteningly like the mold that was in my [rented] apartment's bathroom when I moved in (pictured below). When I discovered it, I promptly killed it (I think?!) with bleach and a lot of obsessively compulsive scrubbing. Any idea how long the incubation period is for the respiratory bleeding? GROSS ... good thing I'm moving in 19 days.

***UPDATE***
The local NBC affiliate has a story that gives a lot more info about the moldy house. Read it here!

the venture's return
Posted on Saturday, January 05, 2008

As reported on by TVSquad.com, Jackson Publick (a pseudonym for Christopher McCulloch) has released the cast photo for The Venture Brothers Season 3 on his LiveJournal blog.

Check it out! 0004b702 (JPEG Image, 2536x1436 pixels)

I was also taken aback at the rudeness of Stephen Colbert in returning to his role of Professor Impossible.

"One sour note from the past month (aside from my car getting hit yet again) is that Mr. Stephen Colbert has decided not to reprise his role as Professor Impossible this season, for reasons which probably have something to do with him being all super-famous, super-busy, and no longer in need of a few hundred bucks here and there. We figured this would happen eventually, considering his monumental success in the years since our first season, but we held out hope that the WGA strike would leave him with enough bored free time on his hands that he'd have a go at it. But after getting shuffled around from his assistant to his assistant's assistant to his agent to his manager, one of them finally shot us an email saying: 'Stephen has neither the time nor the interest in participating in your project.' Was the 'nor the interest' really necessary? I would have bought the 'time' part without question, but man...you gotta kick a guy when he's down like that? Well maybe I'm not interested in your ice cream, mister! Or your book. Unless someone buys it for me for Christmas."

The Venture Brothers season 3 begins in June, 2008.
